You gotted "off-booked."
Yay! you rock.
Now for the real work.
Yeah, I know ...
When does it end?
Hey, you signed up for this.
The final stage before you get your work in front of an audience is working with the individual who will hopefully take your performance to the next level and get you accolades and awards
… or at the very least not get boo'd off the stage.
So …
The Director & You - Match Made in Heaven???
The relationship you will build with your director will hopefully last your entire career.
Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, and host of other directors have their "squad" of actors they always call on when it's time to make a new film because quite simply they work well together.
My hope is that you find your dream director and you live happily ever after.
Some directors are hard to deal with.
Some directors love the craft of acting.
Some directors see actors as walking props to be manipulated.
Whatever the case you want to put yourself in the position to be an asset to the show runner you are working with.
Do Your Job
The number one thing I try to keep in mind when rehearsing …
My job is to execute the director's vision.
If you want to "express yourself" then go write a play and direct it yourself.
If you want to be a working actor, take a note, and make it a reality with your preparation and skill.
Checklist for Staying on Your Director's Good Side
- Are you early?
- Are you warmed up?
- Are you off-book for the scene?
- Are you ready with 3 verbs for each beat in the scene?
- Are you prepared with all the blocking and notes given by the director in writing and ready to be reviewed before EVERY rehearsal?
See you next week!
